WHAT: William Shakespeare's "Hamlet"
WHEN: Feb. 21 - 24 and Feb. 28 - March 1
WHERE: Ted Paul Theatre
COST: $10 for MSU students
The Minnesota State Department of Theatre & Dance will present William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" in celebration of the life of Donabel C. Linney, an MSU English professor from 1965-84. Performances begin tonight and run through March 1. Directed by Paul J. Hustoles, "Hamlet" is one of Shakespeare's best-known tragedies. The play is filled with death and suicide, madness, incest and the supernatural.
Hamlet's father has been murdered, which inspires a whole series of events bent on revenge and destined to bring destruction to all.
To keep up with the productions that MSU has performed this season, Hustoles had Richard Raether, one of only 10 Fight Masters certified by the Society of American Fight Directors, help choreograph "Hamlet."
Raether taught and choreographed stage combat professionally for the past 20 years, staging fights for ABC, CBS and numerous theaters across the U.S., including the Guthrie Theater. "Hamlet" stars Joey Ford, who is familiar with the role, having played the Prince of Denmark in a 2005 production of "Hamlet" in Wyoming. Micah Kronlokken, who was recently honored at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, portrays Horatio. For students living in the dorms, the theatre department is giving an incentive to check out the play. During the 7:30 p.m. show Sunday, the theatre box office will offer a "buy one, get one free" ticket deal. Even if students have already purchased their tickets, they can stop by the box office to claim their free one.
Other individual tickets for "Hamlet" are $10 for current Minnesota State students.
