Catching the national championship on…TBS?
Those without cable missed out on one for the record books
The NCAA National Championship game did not disappoint.
I was sitting in my apartment watching the championship game with my roommates. One is a self-declared University of North Carolina fan; it has something to do with his fiancée being a fan of them since birth. I’m sure, either way, he was sweating bullets the entire game. My other roommate couldn’t care less whom won; he was just looking for good game to watch.
Yeah, he got that. And a little bit more.
We were watching the UNC “Team Stream,” which was playing on TNT, if you were wondering, and I couldn’t get over how biased the announcers called the game. I’m not oblivious that they were cheering for their team, but they were not recognizing how well Villanova played. Maybe I was just getting annoyed because my roommate loved the bias.
Villanova’s “Team Stream” was on truTV, so now they have to apologize to the people who wanted to watch Impractical Jokers marathon for the 300th time.
Anyway, that was the least of my problems with how the game was presented.
My biggest problem? The NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WAS ON TBS. What? Why?
Well, we know why. The answer is the green stuff that none of us college students have enough of in our pockets. That’s money, for those who didn’t make the connection.
But for real, the game was down in viewership by 37 percent, according to USA Today. That is a record low, and comes a year after the game got a record high 28.3 million views for last seasons Duke-Wisconsin matchup on CBS. The game on TBS reached 17.8 millions viewers.
Look at that, they used network television and got more viewers. Who would have thought?
Here is the thing, NCAA, you do not get to complain about viewership when you put the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME ON TBS.
They may not have complained yet, so consider this a warning.
I feel for the people who were unable to watch one of the best national championship games in history. These two teams deserved to be there, both teams played very well and provided a ton of entertainment. It was a very entertaining game, and people missed out on it because the game was not on network TV.
I was scrolling through my Twitter and saw a tweet that tagged Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders that said “Which candidate can get the #FinalFour back on CBS? You have my vote.”
Honestly, please do not do that to us again.
On an unrelated note, the MSU Reporter website is up. Go there and read all the good stuff we put out. Everyone on this staff is talented, except me of course, and do a great job of covering the university. So support them and read it online. Or even better, pick up a print edition, because who doesn’t love to get ink on their hands?
