Women’s hockey continues to struggle on the road

The Mavericks have increased their losing streak to eight games and are 2-13-1 overall

It has been a tough season thus far for the Minnesota State University Mavericks women’s hockey team. The team is currently on an eight-game slide and sitting at 2-13-1 overall after a couple of non-conference losses over Thanksgiving break.

The team traveled to Arlington, Virginia to take on Boston University and Northeastern University on the 24th and 25th of November as part of the D1 in D.C. event at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

The first game was a showdown against the Boston University Terriers. The Terriers came into the match with a record of 5-7-2 and winners of three of their past four.

The first period was filled with scoring, making it a fun game to watch. BU took the first lead of the game as Victoria Bach scored six minutes into the game. The Mavericks responded well, however, as sophomore forward Jordan Jackson scored her third goal of the season just two short minutes later. The goal was assisted by Corbin Boyd and Lindsey Coleman. The tie did not last long as Bach scored for her second time of the game, giving Boston University a 2-1 advantage after the first period.

The second period is where things really got away from the Mavericks. MSU was outscored 3-1 to make the count 5-2 after two periods. Nina Rodgers scored the first two goals of the period for Boston U four minutes in and six minutes into the period to give the Terriers a commanding 4-1 lead.

The Mavericks were not done yet, as Corbin Boyd cut the lead on a power-play goal that was assisted by freshman forward Brittyn Fleming and defensemen Megan Hinze. Victoria Bach then delivered the dagger as she scored her third goal of the game with 13 seconds left in the period to complete a hat trick. Nobody could get anything going thereafter and the final score was Boston University 5, Minnesota State 2.

The second game was not a whole lot better for MSU, as they played against Northeastern, who came into the contest with a 9-7-2 record and just knocked off the number one team in the country.

Northeastern dominated this one from the start. After they went up 3-0 in the first, the Mavericks found the goal as sophomore winger Sofia Poinar scored her second goal of the season.

The Huskies’ offense was just too much, however, as they tacked on two more goals in the second period and one more to top things off in the third to make the final score 6-1.

Northeastern’s top-line of Denisa Krizova, McKenna Brand and Tori Sullivan combined for four goals and five assists for a total of nine points in the contest. Krizova led the way with a hat trick of her own.

The Mavericks return to the ice for an exhibition series next weekend with the Minnesota Whitecaps at the Verizon Center. Puck drops at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 3:07 on Saturday.
