It's never too early to talk hockey.
The Hockey News has ranked the Minnesota State Mavericks logo as the third-best in the Western Collegiate Hockey Season.
The Minnesota Gophers took top honors in the rankings, followed by Alaska-Anchorage, MSU, North Dakota, Wisconsin, St. Cloud State, Denver, Michigan Tech, Minnesota-Duluth and Colorado College.
Cross country
The MSU men's cross country team is ranked No. 6 in the 2008 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason poll.
The Mavericks are coming off a 2007 season where they finished fifth at the national championships.
The men's team is ranked No. 3 in the Central Region poll and the women's team is ranked No. 9.
Earl Preseason All-American
Minnesota State junior Randy Earl was named a Second-Team Preseason All-American by D2football.com.
The defensive end and Racine, Wis., native finished the 2007 season with 66 tackles, 11 sacks and three forced fumbles. Earl was MSU's only member on the First-Team All-North Central Conference squad last year and was also named to the Second-Team All-Northwest Region squad by Daktronics and the Football Gazette.
Earl was the only Maverick to be selected to the First-Team All-NCC last season and was an Honorable Mention All-NCC selection his freshman season.
Earl finished his freshman season at MSU with 52 tackles, 5.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions.
Earl was one of two players from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference to be named a Preseason All-American, along with Southwest Minnesota State's Tyler Reed.
