PREVIEW: MSU hosts another nonconference opponent in Maine over the weekend, after coming off a series split with Connecticut last weekend in All Seasons Arena. It's the Mavericks' last series before beginning WCHA play the following weekend in Grand Forks, N.D., against North Dakota.
FORWARDS: Kala Buganski led the MSU forwards with a goal in each game last weekend. Buganski's scoring should increase this year as she will handle more of the load with Amanda Stohr, Lindsay Macy and Kristina Bunker gone. Head coach Jeff Vizenor believes he will have two productive lines in Buganski-Ashley Young-Maggie Fisher and Emmi Leinonen-Nina Tikkinen-Christina Lee. Lee and Lisa Edman each added a goal and an assist over the weekend. Young and Fisher each had two assists. Freshmen Abby Williams and Ariel Mackley will switch spots for this weekend. Mackley will move to the third line and Williams drops down to the fourth.
DEFENSE: Freshman Emilia Andersson had two assists over the weekend and will be a major contributor to the offense if she can score a decent amount of points from the blue line. The defensive unit returns all of its players except for Jodi Helminen and Andreanne Thibault, so it should be experienced.
IN NET: With Britni Kehler gone, sophomore Paige Thunder and freshman Alli Altmann compete for the starting job. Thunder started Friday's game against the Huskies and Altmann got the start Saturday afternoon. Both will play again this weekend before a starter is chosen.
LAST MEETING: Friday will be the first time MSU and Maine have ever played.
UP NEXT FOR MSU: The Mavericks open WCHA play next weekend when they travel to Grand Forks, N.D., for a series with North Dakota.
