The Minnesota State Student Association passed a Student Allocations Committee motion Wednesday, allocating $500 to both the Chi Alpha Campus Ministry and the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.
The Chi Alpha Campus Ministry plans to use the money to travel to the '08 SALT Conference in Rochester while the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship will use the $500 to travel to a retreat in Brainerd.
Sen. Harshdeep Bhasin said both groups asked for $1,000, but felt $500 would be enough to cover the expenses of their trips.
SAC also recommended allocating $4,162 to the University Repertory Dance Theatre (U-Rep) to attend the American College Dance Festival, a four-day competitive dance competition in Madison, Wisc. Senate was unable to come to an agreement on whether the money should be given to U-Rep, so the motion was moved until the first senate meeting of spring semester.
During homecoming week, five groups, Sigma Nu, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Social Work Club, Hmong Student Association and the St. Thomas More Newman Center, participated in the Homecoming Event Sponsorship Incentive Program.
"Without them a lot of these [homecoming] events would not have happened," said Sen. Jon Sands.
Each group helped different organizations set up and tear down different activities throughout the week. For their involvement, SAC allocated giving each of the five groups $1,000.
Senate Speaker, Ryan Anderson said, "[The money] can be used for an on-campus event or travel."
Senate passed another motion to allocate $1,000 to Social Work Club, Hmong Student Association and the St. Thomas More Newman Center.
Senate passed a motion to vote on giving Sigma Nu and Sigma Sigma Sigma any money until after the next SAC meeting next semester.
In other senate news:
- Senate elected Abdihakin Abdi as a College of Social and Behavioral Sciences senator.
- Both Davenport and Frederick will take part in an alcohol summit on Dec. 17. Frederick said the community and campus can come together there to discuss alcohol issues in the community.
- Senate passed a motion to keep the CSU budget the same without increasing student fees.
- College of Business Sen. Jared Grove talked with Bryan Schneider recently. Grove said it is expected in the spring MSU will begin placing power outlets under all the seats in auditorium classes. Grove added that Schneider hopes students will also be able to check and send e-mails through MSU's voicemail system soon.
