Minnesota State will say farewell to three of its students Thursday (not permanently) as they head to Washington, D.C., for a leadership summit.

Brittney Hansen, Brad Freihoeser and Stacy Scofield were nominated to represent MSU at the fourth-annual National Summit for Progressive Leaders. The summit will begin Thursday and end Monday.

Hansen, Freihoeser and Scofield are three of 180 fellows chosen to attend the summit at the capital. They were nominated through an organization called "Young People For" (better known as YP4). YP4 is an organization that focuses on change in the community through its youth. The group was created in 2004 by People for the American Way Foundation. According to the website, YP4 was developed to create a long-term leadership initiative to invest in the next generation of young people.

Their focus is to build a better future, and empower today's youth. "I'm really excited to just see the city…and building a network with other people my age with progressive ideas who are leaders in their community," Hansen said.

Hansen is a mass communications senior at MSU. She was nominated by Deidre Rosenfeld, director of the Women's Center. Hansen is very involved on campus and keeps busy with many different activities. In the past, she helped put on Luna Fest, a film festival that is made up of nine to 10 short female-oriented films filled with music, and other fun tidbits. Profits from the festival went to Committee Against Domestic Abuse (CADA house), and the American Breast Cancer Fund.

Freihoeser was nominated by Brian Wollum and Kelly Biers, both of whom were 2007 fellows who attended the summit in Washington D.C. Freihoeser is a philosophy and women's studies senior. He is heavily involved with the LGBT Center, putting on events such as the drag show, which has become a popular event on campus. Freihoeser also works with Sexuality and Gender Equality (SAGE), among a long list of other activities.

"YP4 is a huge opportunity", Freihoeser said, "It's an opportunity for me to meet with students who are brilliant."

Freihoeser said he is excited for the opportunity to bounce around ideas and learn new ways to help the community with issues like poverty, race, and class issues.

"I want to take it as a learning experience. I want to grow and learn as much as I can," he said.

"I'm really excited to go learn strategies," said women's studies and English literature senior Stacy Scofield.

Like the other fellows, Scofield is active and passionate about MSU. She serves as co-president of the Women's Study Club, an active member of Feminism in Action and the campus representative for National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL), among others. Scofield said she is looking forward to hearing ways to get her message across more effectively.

She added this is a wonderful opportunity and is glad she was chosen, but would like to let others know that they can self-nominate. Anyone can apply, or nominate someone they think deserves the nomination online.

"I think it's important that the word gets out," Scofield said.

She was nominated by Maria Bevacqua, associate professor and chair of the Women's Studies Department. For more information on YP4, or on how to nominate, visit www.youngpeoplefor.org.
