Minnesota State fell at the hands of Augustana Saturday. The 87-63 loss drops the Mavericks record to 16-3 overall and 2-2 in the North Central Conference.
The two teams seemed evenly matched as the half began. Both teams were making about 30 percent of their shots from the field and the score was tied at 15 points nine minutes into the game. The last nine minutes of the first half was a different story. Augustana had a 14-point scoring run that MSU was unable to answer with a single point.
"Augustana had a really strong defense that clogged up the middle and took away our ability to drive," junior Jo Noreen said.
Despite the best efforts of junior Heather Johnson, who scored nine points in the half, and sophomore Tiffany Moe, seven points, the Mavericks headed into the locker room on the wrong end of a 39-27 score.
A score that low at halftime seems to signal trouble for MSU. The only game during which the Mavericks had a lower first half score was 26 points that led to a loss against Southwest Minnesota State.
MSU was unable to regain any momentum during the second half. Augustana quickly pulled ahead on another run, this time scoring seven points that would go unanswered. By that time the Vikings had carved out enough of a lead to hold onto until the end of the game.
A game statistics comparison between the two teams starts out to be pretty equal. Augustana and MSU both had 15 turnovers. MSU had one more rebound than the Vikings, who ended with 43. But once again, scoring is the statistic where those defeating MSU distinguish themselves. During the second half Augustana shot 45 percent from the field while MSU held steady near 30 percent. Moe, Johnson and junior Jo Noreen all finished the game with 13 points. Augustana added to the score by making 12 of 32 three-point attempts. The Mavericks were also shut out from even attempting a free throw whereas the Vikings made eight of their nine.
South Dakota is currently leading the NCC with a 15 game winning streak and a 3-0 conference record. Augustana is now in second place (4-1) and North Dakota (3-1) currently sits at third.
MSU will take on North Dakota, ranked third in the nation, for a second time 6 p.m. Thursday.
" I think we're ready to face North Dakota this time." Noreen said. " [Last time we faced them] we beat them on paper but we couldn't make the shots."
The Maverick road trip ends with a game against sixth ranked South Dakota 6 p.m. Saturday.
