Issue date: 1/31/08
Section: Womens Sports
WHO:Minnesota State Mavericks (6-17-1, 5-14-1 WCHA) vs. St. Cloud Huskies (15-7-4, 10-7-3 WCHA)
WHERE:Friday - 7:07 p.m., National Hockey Center - St. Cloud; Saturday - 7:07 p.m., All Seasons Arena - Mankato
PREVIEW: The Mavericks and Huskies will hit the rink in a home-and-home series this weekend, Friday in St. Cloud and Saturday in Mankato. The Mavericks are looking to snap their seven-game losing streak.
FORWARDS: The Mavericks' forwards generated some extra offense last weekend compared to previous weeks. Ashley Young returned to the lineup, and played along side Maggie Fisher and Kristina Bunker. This weekend the lines will be mixed-up a bit, with Young and Fisher playing with Lindsay Macy. The other top line will be Amanda Stohr, Kala Buganski and Bunker. MSU's power-play finally came back to life last weekend with three goals, even though they didn't get many opportunities. Head coach Jeff Vizenor said when they did get their chances, they were quality chances and executed. Jenna Hewitt will be out this weekend for the Mavericks.
DEFENSE: MSU's penalty-kill is No. 12 in the nation, but slumped a little last weekend, especially Saturday night, giving up three-power-play goals, but the special-teams units will remain the same. The Mavericks need to stay out of the penalty box this weekend, something that plagued them last series. Senior Andreanne Thibault has steadily increased her point total over her years as a Maverick. With seven points this season, she is only four behind her career total.
IN NET: Britni Kehler is set to start for the Mavericks Friday night. Kehler had a decent series against the Gophers, with most of their offense coming in the final minutes of the periods or on the power-play.
UP NEXT FOR MSU: The Mavericks will host Bemidji State Feb. 8-9 at All Seasons Arena. Bemidji State currently has one WCHA win this season.
