If you're sick of spending your Friday and Saturday nights alone with your friends Ben & Jerry, or you want to meet new people, get ready because speed dating is coming Thursday to Minnesota State.
Casey Malone, a member of Colleges Against Cancer, organized the activity to raise money for Relay for Life, an overnight event sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
Due to limited space, only 10 men and 10 women will be allowed to participate. The guys and girls will be paired up, and each pair will be able to speak for six to eight minutes. Participants will then write down the names of who they would like to see again on their card. If the feeling is mutual, the pair will have their contact information exchanged so they can meet up again if they wish. If not, none of the information is disclosed and the pair never has to worry about seeing each other again.
"I got the idea in November, after a good friend of mine broke up with her boyfriend," Malone said. "I wanted to take her speed dating over break, but all the places I looked at cost at least $50, and you had to be at least 25 to participate. I thought that was ridiculous. So naturally, if you want something that doesn't exist, and you want it badly enough, you make it yourself."
"I think speed dating would be fun, or at least a new experience," said freshman Kelly Huber.
Senior Jenny Jorges agreed. She said the idea "would be pretty interesting."
Malone will emcee for the event, collecting participants' cards and giving contact information to those who listed each other's names. He expressed concern, however, that there would not be enough participants in order for the event to take place.
"I was really hoping to have it done by Valentine's Day, but response hasn't been nearly as overwhelming as I had hoped," Malone said. "I still need about fourteen people - seven guys and seven girls to pull it off. If there aren't enough people interested, I may have to cancel it this time and try to reschedule it for another day."
Anyone interested in Thursday's speed dating should e-mail msuspeeddating@yahoo.com. Once there are enough people interested, an e-mail will be sent with the location and time of the event. Those who are interested are encouraged to sign up as quickly as possible because space is limited. Speed dating is free, but a $5 donation to Relay for Life is suggested.
Colleges Against Cancer meets 5 p.m. every-other Monday in the CSU. Their mission is to unite MSU in the fight against cancer while raising money for cancer research and treatment.
