The Minnesota State women's hockey team returned to the win column with a sweep of No. 10 St. Cloud State this weekend in a home-and-home series, snapping a seven-game losing streak.

The Mavericks knocked off the Huskies 4-1 Friday night in St. Cloud and then again 3-1 Saturday at All Seasons Arena.

After a scoreless first period dominated by MSU, Kala Buganski put the Mavericks on top with a goal just 29 seconds into the second period.

"We came out ready to play, put them on their heels and just made them react to us," head coach Jeff Vizenor said. "We were pretty dominate through the whole game."

After a Lindsay Macy goal in the opening minute of the third period, SCSU came within one, netting its only goal of the game, but just a few minutes later at 12:16 Maggie Fisher scored, followed by an empty-netter by Christina Lee to end the game.

Saturday night's game started the opposite of Friday's for MSU. Instead of the Mavericks dominating play, it was the Huskies. SCSU controlled the puck in MSU's zone for much of the first period, but the Huskies still went into the first intermission down 1-0 after Fisher scored on a deflection.

Ashley Young then scored her second goal of the season in the second period on a power play. Macy and Fisher received the helpers on the play.

"I thought we moved the puck really well on the power play," Fisher said. "We were looking in spaces where they weren't and getting some pucks to the net."

The Huskies answered back with a goal and it was 2-1 to start the third period.

The Mavericks scored another third-period goal in the opening-minute Saturday - just like they did Friday night - to take a 3-1 lead with 19 minutes left to play, when Kristina Bunker deflected a shot off the stick of Andreanne Thibault for a goal.

"They dominated us in the second period and our kids were uptight and nervous," Vizenor said. "To get that monkey off our back and score that goal early was big."

Kehler had one of her best series of the season, making 51 total saves and allowing just one goal both nights.

"She was good [Friday] and was outstanding [Saturday]," Vizenor said. "She made a ton of huge saves. She was the key to the game."

"The defense got in front of the net and didn't give them a lot of second chances," Kehler said. "You can't ask anything more from the defense, they played amazing."

MSU (8-17-1, 7-14-1 WCHA) hits the rink again this weekend when they host Bemidji State at All Seasons Arena.
