Issue date: 2/7/08
Section: Mens Sports
WHO:Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves (7-12-7, 3-12-5 WCHA) at No. 15 Minnesota State Mavericks (13-10-4, 7-9-4 WCHA)
WHEN:Friday - 7:37 p.m., Saturday - 7:07 p.m.
WHERE:Alltel Center - Mankato
PREVIEW: The Mavericks swept their second consecutive WCHA series last weekend, beating No. 7 Denver 5-1 and 3-2. The wins pushed MSU's winning streak to four games and they have surged to nation polls at No. 15. They host last-place Alaska-Anchorage this weekend.
FORWARDS: MSU's offense was potent for the second straight weekend while accumulating 8 goals. Andrew Sackrison was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week for his efforts last weekend against the Pioneers. He tallied 2-2-4 and now has 15 points on the season to rank fourth on the team in scoring. Joel Hanson had two goals last weekend and is on a five-game point-scoring streak. His 17 points tie him for second on the team.
DEFENSE: The Maverick defense was excellent against the Pioneers, as they set the tone both nights. Junior Brian Kilburg lead the charge with several smashing hits both on open ice and along the boards. R.J. Linder also had a nice weekend, chipping in with three assists to go along with his always solid defensive play. Freshman Ben Youds notched his first career goal in Friday's 5-1 victory.
IN NET: Mike Zacharias was steady yet again in net for MSU. He makes his share of spectacular saves, but his good positioning makes it look easy for the junior goaltender, as he has accumulated 2.15 goals against average and a good .920 save percentage this season. He will likely start both games in net for MSU.
LAST MEETING: The last meeting between these two teams came on Oct. 26-27, the Mavericks tied 2-2 before coming back to win 2-0 Saturday. MSU leads the all-time series 25-18-6.
