Reporter wins top awards, shows strength in photography, reporting

The Reporter recently took first place in several categories at the College Better Newspaper Contest, which is a part of the Minnesota Newspaper Association. The Reporter competed with other colleges and universities in the state.
Among them:
• General reporting: Jon Swedien, first place (53 entries), for a story detailing the impacts of violence toward the Anyuak in Ethiopia and how students at MSU tried to raise awareness.
• Portrait and personality photo: Raymond Starin, first place (11 entries) for a photo of a younger brother waiting among a mountain of possessions outside Gage Complex during move-in weekend in August.
• Arts and entertainment reporting: Marianne Reilly, first place (33 entries) for a feature on brass bands.
• Editorial cartoon: Nate Melcher, first place (3 entries), for a cartoon of Popeye feeling sick after eating spinach.
• General advertising excellence, first place (3 entries), for variety, design, creativity, print quality and color of ads.
• Editorial: Andrew Miller, second place (16 entries) for an editorial in response to the Virginia Tech shootings.
• Sports reporting: Andrew Miller, second place (26 entries) for a feature on the women's basketball team's benchwarmer.
• Sports action / feature photo: Raymond Starin, second place (20 entries) for a photo of a wrestler getting pinned.
• News photo: Brian Johnson, second place (20 entries) for a photo of a protesting student whose father was at war.
• Advertisement: Doha Seif, second place (8 entries) for a Kickin' Vintage ad.
• Editorial cartoon: Derek Wehrwein, second place (3 entries), for a help-wanted cartoon.
