Ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourselves, because the battle is about to begin.
The battle of the bands, that is.
Impact's 13th annual Battle of the Bands will be held Wednesday in the Centennial Student Union. That night five bands - Discount Brown, The Evermore Escape (who took top prize at the Battle in 2006), Sweetleaf, Off Like a Prom Dress and Forever Dumb - will compete for the top prize: $500 and $300 worth of recording time with Mankato-based Two Fish Studios. The second place band will receive $250, while the band finishing third gets $100.
This year bands will be judged by MSU music professor Gerard Aloisio; Tony Middendorf, from the What's Up Lounge; Matthew School, from Two Fish Studios; and Zach Brannigan, from The Blaze radio station.
Ashley Marks, the vice president speaker series for Impact's concert company, said the battle is a way for local musicians to gain recognition.
"Battle of the Bands is a way for local bands to get their music out for people to hear," Marks said. "It's also a great way for listeners to show support for the local music scene."
"These five bands were chosen because of their demo tapes or CDs, which everyone trying to enter the competition had to submit," Marks said. "The concert company committee then listened to all of the tapes, and based off what they thought of them, decided the five bands that would compete, along with three alternates."
Bands in Minnesota have a lot to live up to. After all, Bob Dylan and Prince, two of the most influential musicians in the world, claim Minnesota as their home and underground rap and hip-hop artists like Brother Ali and Atmosphere are starting to make an impact in the music world.
The Battle of the Bands will be held from 8:30-10:30 Wednesday. Admission is free and open to anyone.
