The Minnesota State women's basketball team got more than they bargained for Saturday when they faced St. Cloud State University. The 76-62 loss gives the Mavericks a 3-5 North Central Conference record. The defeat was especially unexpected after MSU had dominated the University of Minnesota-Duluth 91-57 Thursday.
MSU came into the game with a statistical advantage over SCSU.
But the team that shows up on paper doesn't always show up on the court. As was the case when the Mavericks battled the Huskies away from the Taylor Center. SCSU started the game with a six-point lead, but MSU was quick to answer, and the score was tied at 12 with about 12 minutes remaining in the first half. The Huskies pulled ahead again with a 28-18 run that left MSU 10 points shy of SCSU's 40 points to end the first half.
The second half began with a 13-2 run and the first lead of the game for MSU. The lead would go back and forth a few more times before finding a permanent home with the Huskies, who went on a 24-11 run to cement the game.
Despite the loss, junior Heather Johnson continues a streak of impressive games. Johnson contributed 20 points to the team total and nailed two free throws. She has now made her last 33 free-throw attempts. Junior Alex Andrews totaled 11 points against SCSU and senior Anna Voltmer also saw double digits with 10 points.
As a team, MSU shot 41.2 percent from the field, committed 23 turnovers and had nine assists. The Mavericks also committed eight steals. This is only the second game of the season that MSU didn't tally 10 or more steals. The first was during the loss to Conrodia-St.Paul.
During MSU's win over UMD Thursday night, it seemed the team was back on track after a three-game losing streak on the road. MSU put the first points on the board and never lost that crucial momentum. By the end of the first half, the Mavericks had a 47-32 lead. The second half saw MSU continuing to increase its lead with 32-18, and later a 12-7 run.
"We played our style of basketball," MSU junior Jo Noreen said. "When we do that, everything seems to go our way."
The Mavericks had an obvious awareness of each other on the court, which enabled them to speed transitions and push down the court quickly. Key plays from sophomore Tiffany Moe, who continually found Johnson in the corner for three pointers and lay ups as well as a catch and release in the second half by junior Alex Andrews, caught the crowd's attention.
Johnson led the team with 21 points and another night of perfect free throws. Senior Jamie Kienitz scored a season-high 14 points and Noreen posted 12. Andrews tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.
MSU will have another chance at NCC-undefeated South Dakota 6 p.m. Thursday at the Taylor Center.
