With six guys in a band, you're bound to have a variety of influences, and these different backgrounds can often clash and create an unusual and discouraging sound.
Not the case for Minneapolis' Roster McCabe.
"Everyone brings things to the table," said Drew Preiner, Roster McCabe's rhythm guitarist and vocalist. "We combine influences like Steely Dan, Bob Marley, Charlie Parker and Earth, Wind, and Fire together to create our sound - a mixture of funk with reggae undertones, jazz, world and samba music."
Roster McCabe will get a chance to show off its unique musical style in Mankato Friday, when the band plays at the Inferno Tavern.
Although the band has been around in some form for several years, it wasn't until January 2007 that Roster McCabe became the way it is.
"We were totally different back then, playing mostly acoustic stuff," Preiner said. "When we changed our sound we kept the name and started playing a bunch of open mic nights around the University of Minnesota. Our line-up changed a bit when, after some tension with our former lead singer, we parted ways. Eventually the group became the way it is now and we faded away from acoustic in favor of what we play now."
One thing that Roster McCabe prides itself on is its deeply personal lyrics.
"Writing our music is a group effort," Preiner said. "We all work on different musical parts."
The lyrics act as a way to connect to the audience, Preiner said.
"We want the audience to know how we're feeling, and do the same thing for the fans that they're doing for us," Preiner said.
Although Roster McCabe has played some bigger shows in Minneapolis, Preiner said the band is used to playing smaller, more intimate shows, like the one at the Inferno.
"We don't expect to play to 400 people every time," Preiner said. "Although it's nice to see new faces and meet new people, we love that we're getting a following in Mankato."
"We've opened for the band Guster, which was awesome because there were around 3,000 people there, but we knew they weren't there for us," Preiner said. "When we played at First Avenue, that was the real deal, because we brought in 400 people that night, and they were all there to see us."
Roster McCabe is set to perform 10 p.m. Friday at the Inferno Tavern. The show costs $3 and is open to the public.
