Mayor Brady PC

No more Us vs. Them

Town and gown must come together

One thing I will not stand for is hypocrisy. Being adamantly for or against something and then doing the complete opposite is one of the most disgraceful things you could do in my book.

That’s why I was steaming, as you should be by now, when Mankato Mayor John Brady, while essentially acting as the president of Mankato, was involved in an alcohol-related arrest resulting in...

Misconceptions of a freshman

For the first time ever, actual readers write to Sports Editor Kyle Ratke for advice.

Here we are for another school year. Not one part of me is excited for this. For the first month it’s nice seeing people we haven’t talked to all summer, but then we realize while having swamp-ass in class and regretting drinking last night, why we haven’t talked to them all summer.

Facebook parents

We don’t resent you, we just want you to go away

In February, the web site Lamebook, which chronicles the best and worst of Facebook encounters, found an interaction between parent and child that perfectly represents one (of many) of the dilemmas occurring on the social networking site. The interaction went like this (pictured):   Maybe I’m nostalgic and miss the time when Facebook wasn’t open to the public.

Unpaid internships impair college students and in some cases, could be illegal

The search for internships can be disheartening for college students, as more and more employers are offering unpaid internships. A recent article from The New York Times explores the growth of unpaid internships and sheds light on some pretty troubling circumstances for students that have led states such as Oregon and California to investigate and fine employers for not paying interns.

An end three years in the making

The Reporter's news editor gives her final goodbyes

As a journalist, my job is to present the facts as they happened and not add my own opinions or slant to the event. I'm meant to inform the public of what is going on and give them enough important information for them to come up with their own thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Matt Sauer gives his final bow

Ladies and gentlemen, this is my final bow. With the thought of finals week now bleeding steadily into each waking moment, and 2010's graduation ceremony no more than ten days away, I've officially checked-out. Yet, despite the excitement inherent in getting the hell out of school for (hopefully) the rest of my life, I find myself torn at the thought of leaving these brick buildings and rusty water fountains behind; somehow disconnected, lonely as the momentum which has carried me this far now slows to a crawl and leaves me wondering: what to do now? It's been five years since I first stepped foot on the windy hill known as Stadium.

A new year brings new responsibilities

The Reporter's assistant news editor comes to terms with her new job

I know I sound like almost every other student right now, but school is over for me. I don't mean that I'm graduating or a finished with finals - I've just checked out. Nothing seems to matter anymore. After next Friday it's officially summer, and then I can just lounge in the sun and relax every day.

Appreciating college at MSU

Lately I have been exhibiting a strange new feeling that seems all too familiar. Over the course of the past several months, while coping with what feels as though a never-ending struggle with the ongoing perils of college life, I have somehow come to realize that another school year is coming to a close.

Letters to the Editor

In Sheran they trust

The 2010 legislative session was a very difficult one for Minnesota’s hospitals with budget shortfalls and a number of very important health care issues before the legislature.  During all of this difficult work, Senator Kathy Sheran worked tirelessly to come up with solutions that were workable for community hospitals making sure that reimbursement cuts did not further disadvantage hospitals in greater Minnesota.

Keeping you safe on campus...

Hello! I hope your new school year has gotten off to a great start. I want to formally introduce myself to you – I am Carol Jensen and I am the Safety Education and Crime Prevention Coordinator with the MSU Security Department. I have been active in this role for 16 years and look forward to working with the Mankato Department of Public Safety as they transition to focusing on Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving.

Oversized sunglasses show style, not identity

Today, my roommate came home in a tizzy. She insisted I read an article in the Reporter called "Bug-eyed Beauties," and asked if she was crazy for being angry. An opinion piece on giant sunglasses? I consider myself a fairly level-headed person, and I was fully prepared to call her crazy.

'Butts' should go in the appropriate receptacle

I'm a second year community health major and I've noticed that we're all enjoying the walks to class more and more since it is becoming much nicer out. I feel that smoking is a right that the students here at Minnesota State have, but I also feel that the non-smokers on campus have the right to clean air and should not be forced to breathe in secondhand smoke.
