A different life path

After a career as an actress, Dawn Rae Davis decided to leave it all and go back to school

Dawn Rae Davis has a secret. She is in her first year as an assistant professor of gender and women's studies at Minnesota State, but she wasn't always a professor.  Though she grew up in Minnesota and Iowa, she has lived in many major U.S. cities, from Boston to Los Angeles, because of her rather surprising former career: acting.

Meet Lt. Col. Joel Stephenson.  He is many things to people who know him - soldier, leader, husband, and father.  Stephenson has only been in Mankato since last summer but feels the people he's met and the help he's received from Minnesota State has been incredible.

Thomas Gjersvig hopes to have a global environment on campus

"I have about 600 favorite students," Thomas Gjersvig, Director of the Kearney International Center at Minnesota State, said, with a big smile on his face. On a snowy Monday, his office inside the international center is warm and lightly ornamented with small souvenirs from many countries.

Keisha Hebrink balances school, marriage and an internship

Keisha Hebrink is beautiful, very busy and, by her own admission, also a bit gullible. So she believed her boyfriend Josh when, on Christmas Eve 2008, he said he needed to stop at their church to check his dad's mailbox. But mail wasn't on Josh's mind that night.

Joey West gets students to open up in acting class

After teaching an introductory acting class during the fall for the first time at Minnesota State, Joey West decided to try a different approach. He backed off on lectures this semester and has his new section of students taking learning on their feet. The non-traditional techniques and improv activities the MFA candidate in the Department of Theatre & Dance acting program implemented are already getting his students to open up.

The final ride for a proven winner

Jesse Clark has accomplished a lot as a Maverick. He thinks one thing is missing.

When Minnesota State basketball senior point guard Jesse Clark came to Mankato as a walk-on in 2005 from Sioux Falls, S.D., he knew he could play at the Division II level. He'd be lying if he thought it would all go as well as it has. "To be honest, I just didn't really get recruited by DII schools," said Clark.

Freshman honors student Erika Koenig gets a start on her elementary education major

Every Friday last semester freshman Erika Koenig would bike six miles up and down Stadium Hill to get to school.  While the freshman was enrolled at Minnesota State, that's not where she was going so faithfully, rain or shine.  She was biking to Monroe Elementary School in North Mankato.

Sigma Nu member Maxime Colange enjoys his short time in the United States

Before Maxime Colange arrived in the United States, he knew he wanted to become involved in a very American aspect of college life: a fraternity. In France and most European countries there are no fraternities or sororities. "Before coming to Minnesota I knew I wanted to join a fraternity," Colange said.

Minnesota State student Miles Kipper plays a key role in bringing musical performances to MSU. A senior in the international business program, Kipper joined Impact's Concert Company because of his appreciation of music and desire to be involved on campus.

Musician, writer Ann Fee takes part in creative culture

Director of Publications at Minnesota State Ann Fee brings creativity and art to the Mankato community in many ways. A vocalist with the acoustic pop bar-band Fish Frye, Fee performs cover music from the '60s to '80s at various venues around the area. They play at the Wine Café, Pub 500, Richards, Willie's in St.

A coaching champion

Mark Schuck has been coaching at MSU since 1979

For more than 40 years, Mark Schuck has retained a constant presence at Minnesota State, playing the roles of student, volunteer, coach, advisor and teacher. Schuck, MSU's men's cross country and track and field coach, began his tenure coaching the cross country team in 1979, later adding track and field to his resume.

Brenda Flannery's time abroad changed her worldview

Professor Brenda Flannery has led a well-traveled and accomplished life outside of the Minnesota State College of Business. "I love to travel because I love to learn," said Flannery. In 2004 she took a year of sabbatical and lived in Central Mexico with her husband, Joe, and two children.

Injuries didn't stop Ryan Fick

They say that one man's misfortune is another man's opportunity. This is what happened when senior quarterback Ryan Fick went down in just the team's second game, with a broken fibula. Fick returned against Minnesota State University-Moorhead and showed signs of his old self.

Senate Speaker Tom Williams brings good spirits to MSSA

Minnesota States Student Association's Speaker Tom Williams is self-professed to be an uninteresting person.  According to others who know him, his mediocre view of self comes from his compassion for the needs of others. As Speaker for the senate, Williams runs the general Senate meetings.

Making it count

Brittany Stamer shows determination on the court and in the classroom

Brittany Stamer, a sophomore at Minnesota State has wanted to play volleyball at a collegiate level ever since she was a child. With her caring attitude and willingness to help other, however her true passion is to get a degree in nursing. Stamer will be the first of MSU's volleyball players to pursue nursing as a major while playing volleyball.

Scott Hagebak has taken an active role in the development of MSU since the 1960s

Building director of the Centennial Student Union, Scott Hagebak, has been coming and going from the MSU campus every since his freshmen year in the fall of 1967. In his years on campus, he has witnessed many changes among students and the Mankato area as well as having an active role in the antiwar movement in the '70s.

Exploring the world through film

MSU film professor travels the world to find the best

Minnesota State professor Donna Casella isn't one to stay put. From her extensive worldwide travels, it's apparent the film expert doesn't care to just sit comfortably, but rather experience all the life the world has to offer. Casella is currently on a one-year sabbatical, living in the Northern Ireland town of Lurgan, where she is researching indigenous Irish films from the silent era for two academic articles she is writing.

Philosophy finds MSU prof

Dr. Richard Liebendorfer is a man of many disciplines. At his core he is a scholar, a professor, philosopher, and a student of the world. Liebendorfer began his academic career as a political science major; he planned on attending law school. His real passion was unearthed while taking a modern philosophy class as an undergraduate student.
