Best breakfast: Weggy’s

Close to campus, Weggy’s breakfast is close to our hearts

In season 2, episode 20 of Parks and Recreation, Leslie Knope asks Ron Swanson, “Why would anyone eat anything besides breakfast food?” Swanson replies, “People are idiots, Leslie.”

You could rephrase that question and ask: Why would anyone eat anything besides breakfast food when Weggy’s exists? Weggy’s, located in University Square Mall on campus, is home to a number of inexpensive and signature breakfast entrees. The restaurant is open 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. and serves breakfast all day in addition to regular restaurant entrées during lunch and dinner hours.

Weggy’s has that hometown diner feel and it shows. The staff is very friendly and you can taste the heart and passion of the cooks in each bite. It’s a very relaxing place to hang out with friends, take your family to or work on homework at.

The menu is very eclectic, detailed, expansive and is sure to have something for your tastes.

Would you turn down something called a Belly Buster? Make sure you wear your big pants for this one. The menu describes it as “a mound of hash browns, covered with sautéed onions, green peppers, tomatoes, melted cheese and bacon, topped off with two eggs, served with a side of toast.” You can eat MSU mascot Stomper’s favorite sandwich, appropriately named The Stomper Breakfast Sandwich. This features two scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon and sausage served on your choice of toasted bagel, croissant or English muffin. If you’re a simple person who enjoys two eggs and toast, the Early Bird Special for $2.49 is just for you.

You can be the maker when it comes to omelets at Weggy’s. For $9.49, you can choose three ingredients to include in your omelet with each additional one for 50 cents. These omelets are served with hash browns and toast. If you aren’t in the mood to make your own, try one of Weggy’s other omelets like the Mankato, What’s Up Doc or Hangover omelets.

Pancake lovers are in for a treat when they try Weggy’s famous buttermilk pancakes. These cakes are fluffier than a one-month-old puppy. You can even flavor them with blueberry, strawberry, banana walnut, bacon and flavor of the week options. The same type of fluffiness can be said about Weggy’s French toast.

Weggy’s should be a breakfast staple for all MSU students, especially those living on or near campus. Even if you have time between classes, grab some of your friends and go get a taste of their magnificent breakfast.
