2018BEST OF MANKATO

Best Restaurant: Pappageorge

A family based business proves successful

This is a family-oriented restaurant, owned by the descendant of a Greek immigrant, Michael Papageorge, who arrived in Chicago around the turn of the 20th Century.

The family began the business several years after coming to America, and after changing their last name to Pappas, the original restaurant name.

Some years later they opened a restaurant in Rochester, Minnesota under the name Michaels. A second Michaels was opened in Mankato in the 1960s. In 1982, J. Pappas and partner opened another restaurant and saloon called Maggie’s Saloon and Café where they worked together until the establishment was sold in May of 2006. In September of 2007, the younger Jay opened the present Pappageorge restaurant in honor of his great great Grandfather and their original family name.

Jay (flip) Pappas has carefully created a classic eatery, catering to the eating comforts of his customers. They pride themselves in a creative, comfortable and casual atmosphere that caters to every customer’s needs. The address is 1028 Riverfront Drive, their hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday/Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. They provide food, drink, and catering. They are a family-friendly restaurant with a well-rounded menu that contains something for everyone. Check them out and enjoy.
