This past weekend, the Mavericks men’s baseball team kicked off their season with two victories against the Arkansas-Monticello Weevils before losing the third game on Sunday.

The first game was scoreless for the first three innings.

It wasn’t until senior left fielder Jordan Hart belted a three-run shot to left field making the score 3-0.

To follow that up, Ty Buck also hit a solo home run later in the third. The junior went 2 for 3 with walks.

Senior Tory Miller drove in senior catcher Tom Imholte for the Mavs’ fifth run of the game on a single down the left field line.

Senior Jon Ludwig got the victory on the mound for the Mavs, going six innings and striking out nine.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mavericks were on a roll.

In the first, it was Imholte again who scored off an error from the outfielder after a hit once again from Buck. Buck would score later after a groundout hit from Hart.

Senior infielder Tory Miller had an RBI double in the second and went one fore three on the day. Buck hit his second homer of the season, putting the Mavs up 4-0 with a solo shot.

Junior second baseman Teddy Peterson scored in the fourth and fifth innings as he went two for five with two singles. The Mavs ended up scoring five in the fifth inning in route to a dominating 11-1 victory.

Sophomore Cam Kline got the win on the mound, going five innings and striking out six at the plate.

Junior Jack Rasmussen and freshman Collin Denk came into the game to relieve Kline, to close out the win.

Unlike the first two games, the third was closely-contested.

Right away, the Mavs took the lead after a wild pitch where Teddy Peterson ran in for the score. The Weevils responded with a run of their own off a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the first.

The Mavericks would get the upper hand in the next two innings, as they scored off a bases loaded walk and an RBI single.

However, Arkansas-Monticello answered right back with a solo shot from junior outfielder Elijah Celaya in the bottom of the third.

That would be followed by six more runs in the following two innings by the Weevils, bringing the game to 8-3.

MSU responded with three runs of their own as they tried to comeback late.

Freshman shortstop Nick Altermatt scored on a groundout, and Peterson smashed a two-run home run in the eighth.

Despite a rally late in the game, the Mavericks fell short to the Weevils, losing 9-7.

Peterson had 3 RBI’s and went 1-3 at the plate, while Imholte was 2-4 with an RBI.

The Mavericks next play during a spring break trip in Florida, March 1-8. There, they face multiple teams but begin with a game against UT-Tyler.
