The Minnesota State Mavericks women’s soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament after defeating the Augustana Vikings 1-0. The Mavericks are set to play the Central Missouri Jennies in the next round.

Minnesota State now holds a perfect 3-0 record against the Vikings this season. This game was defensively played, with the only goal of the game coming in the second half from sophomore forward Jenny Vetter.

Sophomore Brynn Desens kicked the ball downfield to Vetter, who was the only Maverick on that end of the field. Vetter outran the two Vikings covering her on the play and was able to sneak the ball in the lower left-hand side of the goal.

MSU controlled most of the offensive gameplay and were able to dominate Augustana in shots. The Mavericks were able to get up 28 shots and putting 16 of them on net, whereas the Vikings only shot 15 times and just four were on net.

Senior goalie Alexa Rabune was able to add another win to her record. She stopped four shots and holds a 16-2-1 record on the season.

The Mavericks have already played Central Missouri once this year, defeating them 2-0. These two have played each other seven times in the past and MSU is 2-4-1 in those games.

The Jennies’ leading scorer is junior Makayla Toth, who has 18 goals and eight assists on the season.

Sophomore Kassie Newsom is the next player in line with the most offensive production, adding eight goals and nine assists to her stat line.

The Mavericks and Jennies will play on Friday, Dec. 6 at home in Mankato.
