Women’s hockey splits in Windjammer Classic

Last weekend the Mavericks women’s hockey team took part in the Windjammer Classic Tournament in Burlington, Vermont and came out in third place.

Unfortunately, Friday’s game would present itself as more of a challenge for the Mavericks, as they faced off against the No. 7-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights.

CU scored twice within the first two periods and MSU remained scoreless throughout the game.

Mavericks sophomore goaltender Abigail Levy made 30 saves in this first game of the tournament and the Mavericks were outshot by the Golden Knights by a 34-21 margin.

Saturday would look brighter for MSU as they were able to come out on top with a 2-0 shutout win against the University of Vermont Catamounts. No goals were scored within the first two periods of the game.

It wasn’t until Sophomore blueliner Anna Wilgren, who scored her third game winning goal of the season, to ensure the Mavericks lead.

Despite Vermont being on a power play, sophomore winger Claire Butorac scored her fifth goal of the season with only four seconds left in the game.

Freshman Calla Frank (4-3-1) made 23 saves and helped stop all six Catamounts power play opportunities in her second shutout of her career.

The women’s team will play the University of Minnesota this Saturday in Prior Lake for the Hall of Fame Classic.
