Student Government welcomes new senators

The Student Government appointed two new senators to fill the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the At Large Senator position during Wednesday’s meeting as the Allied Health and Nursing senator resigned.

Student Government welcomed David Wing who will represent the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Wing has previously served on the 89th student government senate as the senator for off-campus housing and is the president of Turning Point Mankato.

“I believe that my experiences as a previous senator will translate well this year. Especially with the new combination of the College of Art and Humanities and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences,” Wing said.

Bezawit Berhanu, a transfer student from the University of Minnesota- Morris, also was appointed and sworn into the At Large senator position. This will be her first time serving on the senate.

During announcements, Namita Basnet stepped down from her position as the Allied Health and Nursing senator due to what she called “scheduling conflicts,” but said she’s enjoyed serving on Student Government.

“I don’t have enough time [to be on senate], but I learned a lot this year and the past year with my friends and colleagues,” said Basnet.

Fellow senators voiced their opinions about her leaving.

“Please don’t leave us. You are an amazing person and if you need more support we are all here to help you succeed. I beg of you to not resign,” said Douglas Roberts, Student Government senator.

Speaker Storm Novak officially voiced that the senator for Allied Health and Nursing will now be vacant and will open in two weeks.

Other orders of business in the meeting consisted of officer reports from Senator Sierra Roiger and Senator Douglas Roberts. Senator Destined Sehgbean received August Senator of the month from President Emma Zellmer.
